YC Connect: Composting on Randall’s Island

On hot, humid Saturday, August 8, Yale Community Connect volunteers Sam Rubin and his father Allan Rubin signed up with The Mission Continues at the Randall’s Island Park Alliance farm, which produces food for NYC residents during this time of food insecurity through #operationnourish. Sam, Allan, and other TMC volunteers helped sustain the farm by composting 300 pounds of food scraps. They also removed invasive species from the farm and mulched the entire area of 800 square feet to prevent their return.

The Randall’s Island Park Alliance’s Urban Farm is a 40,000 SF environmentally-sustainable farm and outdoor classroom at Randall’s Island Park. The mission of the Farm is to offer local children and families the chance to experience and learn about agriculture in an urban setting, as well as to teach essential life skills and support academic learning through hands-on classes exploring how choices about food affect their health, the environment, and their communities. Randall’s Island Park Alliance to date has contributed 500 lbs of produce to local partners in East Harlem and the South Bronx. In support of Operation Nourish, the group helped the farm with some weeding, composting, and mulching to keep the farm running at peak performance in order to continue to support their efforts during the pandemic.
