Fernandez ’20 PhD\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA dedicated mentor\, Fernandez served as a coordinator for Yale’s Science\, Technology\, and Research Scholars program (known as STARS II)\, which is committed to supporting women\, minorities\, the economically underprivileged\, and historically underrepresented students in the sciences\, engineering\, and math. He also co-founded Científico Latino\, a STEM organization that works to bolster the pipeline of underrepresented students in higher education in the sciences. Fernandez is a decorated scientist\, having been named a 2014 Paul and Daisy Soros Fellow and as one of the 100 most inspiring Hispanic/Latinx scientists in America by Cell Mentor. He received his PhD from the Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry Department at Yale and is currently a postdoctoral scientist at Columbia University.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMorris is the founder and chief executive officer of Church Health in Memphis\, Tennessee\, which provides quality\, affordable healthcare for working\, uninsured people and their families. A family practice physician and an ordained United Methodist minister\, Morris has revolutionized healthcare for the working poor in Memphis\, recruiting doctors\, nurses\, dentists\, and more to volunteer\, all while securing a broad base of financial support from the faith community. Buoyed by those efforts\, Church Health has grown to become the largest faith-based\, privately funded health center in the nation\, serving more than 75\,000 patients and handling approximately 44\,000 patient visits annually. For his efforts and great work\, Morris has been recognized by major organizations including the American Medical Association\, which awarded him its Excellence in Medicine Award in 2008.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nG. Scott Morris ’80 MDiv\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMegan Sardis ’21\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA believer in the power of community to help vulnerable children reach their full potential\, Sardis founded the nonprofit organization SNUGS National\, which has developed free aquatic clinics for special needs children at eight locations across the U.S. That includes Yale’s Payne Whitney gymnasium\, where the sessions are run by Yale student volunteers. To date\, SNUGS National has served more than 150 families and has raised more than $15\,000 in donations\, and it has cultivated a 13-member board with teams in finance\, communications\, marketing\, and development. As a student of Global Affairs\, Sardis is on pace to graduate in May 2021. She has a specific interest in health initiatives on the African continent. She hopes to attend medical school and pursue a career in pediatric global health after her time at Yale.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrlando Yarborough III\, PhD GRD ’10\, Moderator\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYarborough is passionate about values-based transformation and empowering executive and global leaders to change the world. A consultant\, speaker\, and coach\, Yarborough co-founded the Well Company for leaders committed to creating an environment of leadership development and personal growth. He facilitates values-based collaborative leadership with the Community Leadership Program of New Haven\, and also with learning labs for interpersonal and group dynamics (IDP) and global team leadership with the Yale School of Management. He serves on the executive board of Friends Center for Children and on the Meyerhoff Alumni advisory board. Yarborough earned his BS in Biology and Africana Studies from University of Maryland and a PhD in Genetics from Yale. Some of the tasks we will be focusing on are the following: 1. There are steps that leads to the beach that are on their last leg. We need volunteers who will be willing to come out and help rebuild the stairs to make it easier to access the area and avoid serious injuries. 2. There are very large debris that are still on the beach that we would very like to get rid of. We need people to help break it down and take it out of the beach area so we can open up more space for people to use and capitalize on it by building something new there when the weather gets warmer again. 3. There is still some trash we didn’t manage to get to the last time we was out there and was hoping to cover the area that we didn’t get. If you or someone you know is interested in either breaking some stuff\, building stuff or both\, please sign up below. \nWhat To Wear: TMC swag and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty in. DESCRIPTION:Racism in Healthcare: Racism is a Public Health Crisis\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nJoin us for a dialogue about Racism in Healthcare with Dr. Krenie Stowe\, recipient of the Ally Award from the Center for the Healing of Racism in 1995. \nKrenie Stowe describes herself as a mother and activist first\, a pediatrician and attorney second. She is a board-certified pediatrician with over 30 years of experience in the trenches of clinical medicine. \nGrounded in a lifelong commitment to social justice\, she is a tireless advocate of sweeping health care reform. \nShe received her BA from Yale University in 1981\, an MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1985. Following a pediatric internship at New York University Medical Center\, she attended Harvard Law School\, graduating magna cum laude in 1990. She then returned to New York to complete pediatric residency training at Montefiore Medical Center’s Residency Program in Social Medicine. \nCommitted to providing medical care to underserved communities\, she has worked with Native American communities rural North Dakota and Portland\, Oregon\, with migrant communities in Oregon’s agricultural valley and urban immigrant communities in Massachusetts. \nShe practiced for 19 years in Texas\, founding the Frontis Project\, a non-profit health care facility that provided medical care\, emergency assistance\, and social support and advocacy services to 11\,500 children and their families; then establishing HEAL\, Health Education\, Advocacy & Literacy\, with a mission to support\, inform and empower people caring for children and to reform the role of health care in the lives of individuals and in our society at large. \nDr Stowe describes her approach to medicine as follows: “My work emphasizes empowerment\, education and prevention\, encouraging people to be active participants in care rather than passive recipients of care. \nClass\, race/ethnicity and gender/gender identity all continue to profoundly impact health status and access to care. To address health disparities\, we must identify and break down economic and racial and cultural barriers to care\, as well as deeper internal barriers that stem from feelings of isolation\, hopelessness and marginalization.” \nREGISTER

When we think about carbon\, the value of rural forests in mitigating climate change and offsetting emissions is well understood. However\, in urban settings\, the contribution of forests in capturing and storing carbon is not well quantified. \nIn 2019\, the NAC used extensive forest assessment data to calculate the amount of carbon sequestered and stored in New York City’s forested natural areas. We completed this study to better understand the value of this resource in mitigating climate change and to evaluate the role of restoration and management in influencing carbon capture. Spoiler alert: New York City’s urban forests have a lot of potential to be part of the climate solution. \nThis event is limited to 100 spots.
