SUMMARY:Public Art: Supporting Art as a Way to Build Up & Bind Local Communities
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\nYANA WEBINAR\nNecessary Relevance: The Role of the Arts in Society\nYANA has developed a series of programs to explore the role of arts and culture in society\, particularly in a tenuous economy and amidst fervent social justice movements. Join us for any or all of the upcoming programs featuring Yalies in all parts of the arts and cultural sectors. \n*** \nPublic Art: Supporting Art as a Way to Build Up & Bind Local Communities \nSupporting art as a way to build up and bind local communities\, and engage in creative placemaking and urban revitalization \nPanelists discussed “Public Art” through prompts such as: What is the role that art plays in public space? Why and how should the public be given art in communal and public spaces? Who should financially support public works and space of art\, and how much? \n\n\nTuesday\, Jan. 12\, 2021 \n*** \nJONATHAN HARRIS \nEmeritus Professor in Global Art & Design Studies\, Birmingham City University \nEMILY HOOPER LANSANA ’88 \nDirector of Community Arts\, Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts / University of Chicago \nSAMANTHA MATLIN\, PhD \nVP of Learning & Community Impact\, Thomas Scattergood Behavioral Health Foundation \nSARA ANSELL \nDirector\, Mural Arts Porch Light Program \nTOVA SNYDER ’82 \nInternational Painter & Muralist \nSPEAKER BIOS \nWe began with opening remarks about the series\, gave some background data points on the Federal and State budgets and private philanthropy in the US\, and then we moved into the program: \n\nJonathan Harris gave a brief history lecture on the history of federal arts grants in the US starting in a similar crisis of power and transition in US history in the 1930s during the New Deal and the community art centers operated by the Federal Art Project; he raised the issue of not having a commonly understood definition of what is “public” — never mind what constitutes “art” in a multicultural society like ours; he also advocated for radically de-centralized control of resources that help support the creation of and access to art as a way for democracy to move forward;\nSamantha Matlin and Sara Ansell discussed the Porch Light Project and the study of whether public art can improve public health;\nTova spoke about her experiences as a public art and mural artist\, and her flexibility of engagement with the local communities in which she travels and works; and\nEmily Hooper Lansana described the empowering work of developing storytelling for individuals to be living tributes to culture and history in their communities\n\nSUMMARY & RESOURCES

SUMMARY:YC Connect: MLK Day of Service w/ The Mission Continues
DESCRIPTION:YC Connect & The Mission Continues\nMLK – 134 st Community Space & Garden Build!\n\nSaturday\, Feb. 16\, 2021 | 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM ET\n134th St Community Lot\n521 134th Street\nNew York City\, NY 10031\n\n*** \n\nDETAILS & REGISTER\nCome join us to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. by practicing what he preached and help connect the people of Harlem with the building of a Community Space and Garden on 134th Street. The 134th Street Block Association has been using an empty lot to gather for neighborhood events and gathers. The Mission Continues has been working hard with the 134th Street Block Association to make the lot a space that the neighborhood can be proud of and a center for activity for the community. On this Dr. Martin Luther King Day we are going to continue to make this dream a reality by continuing the plan to revitalize the lot into a Community Space and Garden with the construction of a performance stage\, garden beds and a shaded pergola for the summer. Please join us in building our communities one brick ( or garden bed) at a time!
