SUMMARY:YANA Town Hall Feature: Educational Equity Under Attack
DESCRIPTION:YANA Town Halls are Live from New York!\nYANA Town Halls provide an opportunity for mission-driven alums to exchange ideas and information to help achieve social impact. These events occur live at the Yale Club of NYC and via Zoom. You don’t need to be a member of the Yale Club to join us! \nREGISTER\nMeet Kimberly Jones ‘00\, President\nCouncil for Opportunity in Education\n\n\n\n\nJuly 30 | 6:30 PM ET – In-Person (Yale Club of NYC) & via Zoom \nYANA Town Hall Feature: Educational Equity Under Attack \nThe letter arrived on May 2\, 2025\, threatening to eliminate programs that have transformed millions of low-income\, first-generation students into college graduates over 60 years. When the Trump Administration’s budget proposal called for completely cutting Federal TRIO Programs\, Kimberly Jones ’00 knew she had just months to mount a defense. \nAs President of the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE)\, Jones mobilized an unprecedented response across all 50 states. Within weeks\, thousands of emails flooded Congressional offices\, over 10\,000 TRIO alumni signed petitions\, and local news stories highlighted how these programs change lives. The grassroots campaign reached every corner of America\, from rural communities to urban centers. \nBut the fight intensified when the Department of Education began issuing grant cancellation notices to programs just days before their funding expired. “These unwarranted cancellations serve as a troubling warning\,” Jones wrote to supporters\, launching COE’s $500\,000 Educational Opportunity Campaign to sustain the defense. \nJones brings unique credibility to this battle. A New Haven native and 1999 Harry S. Truman Scholar\, she’s built one of higher education’s most effective advocacy operations since joining COE in 2007. Under her leadership\, the organization has secured over a billion dollars in federal funding for underserved students. \nHer approach combines Washington insider knowledge with grassroots organizing power. When programs serving 870\,000 students annually face elimination\, Jones doesn’t just lobby—she mobilizes entire communities to tell their stories. \nJoin YANA’s Town Hall on July 30 to hear directly from Jones about defending educational equity in an era of unprecedented attacks on opportunity programs.

SUMMARY:Live from NYC: Dr. Azita Emami\, Dean of the Yale School of Nursing
DESCRIPTION:Live from NYC!\nDr. Azita Emami\, Dean of the Yale School of Nursing\nNursing is in crisis. While doctors are in charge of a patient’s medical care\, nurses are the backbone of our healthcare industry. They are the first people that patients interact with — assessing and triaging patients\, monitoring vital signs\, and administering treatments while providing compassionate care\, and educating individuals and families about health. But the U.S. is now facing a shortfall of up to 450\,000 nurses\, 20% fewer than required for patient care. Against this backdrop\, the Yale School of Nursing\, ranked 6th in the world\, plays an important leadership role in addressing the challenges and opportunities faced by the nursing profession. \nPlease join us on Wednesday\, May 29th at the Yale Club (and virtually via Zoom) as YANA’s Town Hall spotlights Dr. Azita Emami\, Dean of the Yale School of Nursing\, who will share her thoughts on the current crisis and her vision for the future. \nMay 29 | 6:30pm ET – In-Person (Yale Club of NYC) & via Zoom\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Tour of "Photographic Justice: A Tribute to Corky Lee"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of Photographic Justice: A Tribute to Corky Lee with Curator Chee Wang Ng and US Magistrate Judge Peggy Kuo YC’85\n\nThurs Dec 15\, 3:30pm-5pm\n225 Cadman Plaza East\, Brooklyn\, NY 11201\nThe Hon. Charles P. Sifton Gallery on the first floor of US District Court for the Eastern District of New York\n\nRegister for the event here: https://forms.gle/43g4hyJ1TqX9iHR6A\n \nCurator Chee Wang Ng will recount Corky’s legacy in the Asian American community and his impact on artists who have contributed to this exhibition. As part of the event\, US Magistrate Judge Peggy Kuo YC’85 will be offering a tour of the courthouse\, including the Ceremonial Courtroom where naturalization ceremonies take place.\n\n\nThirty photographers from across the United States pay homage to their beloved friend\, colleague\, and mentor Corky Lee\, who passed away on January 27\, 2021 due to complications from COVID-19. In addition\, the Estate of Corky Lee lent a select number of photographs from its archives for the exhibition. The photographs on view are rich and diverse in perspective; together they pay tribute to Lee and his life’s service to Asian communities across the United States. \nLee was a passionate Chinatown community activist and a self taught photographer. During his extraordinary fifty years of covering an incredibly varied range of Asian American community life\, Lee became known as the “Undisputed\, Unofficial Asian American Photographer Laureate.” Lee inspired a generation of Asian American photographers and community activists to document the life and struggles of everyday Asian Americans and fight against injustice\, inequality\, stereotyping\, and discrimination. He was one of the founding members of the Basement Workshop\, and was instrumental in the formation of the Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans. In 2014\, he staged a reenactment of the 1869 Golden Spike ceremony\, which marked the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. He called this gathering of Asians and Asian Americans at Promontory Summit\, Utah an act of “photographic justice.” \n\n\nThis event is organized by the Association of Asian American Yale Alumni (AAAYA) in collaboration with 1stGenYale and Yale Alumni Nonprofit Alliance (YANA)
