SUMMARY:YC Connect: 28th Ave Beach Cleanup with TMC Queen's Platoon
DESCRIPTION:28th Ave Beach Cleanup with The Mission Continues\nBuilding Up & Breaking Down\nOctober 24\,2020 10:00 AM-03:00 PM \n28th Ave Beach:\n119-6 28th Ave\, Queens\, NY 11354 \n\nEvent Overview \n\nJoin the Queens Platoon as we partner up again with Coastal Prevention Network to build up on the 28th ave beach. Some of the tasks we will be focusing on are the following: 1. There are steps that leads to the beach that are on their last leg. We need volunteers who will be willing to come out and help rebuild the stairs to make it easier to access the area and avoid serious injuries. 2. There are very large debris that are still on the beach that we would very like to get rid of. We need people to help break it down and take it out of the beach area so we can open up more space for people to use and capitalize on it by building something new there when the weather gets warmer again. 3. There is still some trash we didn’t manage to get to the last time we was out there and was hoping to cover the area that we didn’t get. If you or someone you know is interested in either breaking some stuff\, building stuff or both\, please sign up below. \nWhat To Wear: TMC swag and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty in. Dress for the weather as it may get chilly throughout the day. \n\nWhat to Bring: TMC swag and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty in. \nParking: Street Parking available \nInclement Weather: In the event of bad weather\, we will postpone the event to a later date. Anyone with questions can contact Daquane Mays with The Mission Continues (dmays@missioncontinues.org\, (347) 344-7929). \nMore Info & Register

SUMMARY:Racism in Healthcare: Racism is a Public Health Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Racism in Healthcare: Racism is a Public Health Crisis\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nJoin us for a dialogue about Racism in Healthcare with Dr. Krenie Stowe\, recipient of the Ally Award from the Center for the Healing of Racism in 1995. \nKrenie Stowe describes herself as a mother and activist first\, a pediatrician and attorney second. She is a board-certified pediatrician with over 30 years of experience in the trenches of clinical medicine. \nGrounded in a lifelong commitment to social justice\, she is a tireless advocate of sweeping health care reform. \nShe received her BA from Yale University in 1981\, an MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1985. Following a pediatric internship at New York University Medical Center\, she attended Harvard Law School\, graduating magna cum laude in 1990. She then returned to New York to complete pediatric residency training at Montefiore Medical Center’s Residency Program in Social Medicine. \nCommitted to providing medical care to underserved communities\, she has worked with Native American communities rural North Dakota and Portland\, Oregon\, with migrant communities in Oregon’s agricultural valley and urban immigrant communities in Massachusetts. \nShe practiced for 19 years in Texas\, founding the Frontis Project\, a non-profit health care facility that provided medical care\, emergency assistance\, and social support and advocacy services to 11\,500 children and their families; then establishing HEAL\, Health Education\, Advocacy & Literacy\, with a mission to support\, inform and empower people caring for children and to reform the role of health care in the lives of individuals and in our society at large. \nDr Stowe describes her approach to medicine as follows: “My work emphasizes empowerment\, education and prevention\, encouraging people to be active participants in care rather than passive recipients of care. \nClass\, race/ethnicity and gender/gender identity all continue to profoundly impact health status and access to care. To address health disparities\, we must identify and break down economic and racial and cultural barriers to care\, as well as deeper internal barriers that stem from feelings of isolation\, hopelessness and marginalization.” \nREGISTER

They provide a safe and inclusive space to experience nature and come together as a community in celebration and in protest — all while cleaning our air and improving our environment. \nAs New York City works to become a more equitable city in the face of these growing challenges\, what role do our parks and natural resources play in achieving that goal? Whether they’re mitigating the urban heat island effect or simply providing safe and inclusive spaces to experience nature\, our city’s parks need investment by our government\, as well as community support\, funding\, and advocacy to be beneficial for all New Yorkers. \nJoin the Natural Areas Conservancy\, Prospect Park Alliance\, and WE ACT for Environmental Justice on Tuesday\, September 22\, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for a virtual panel discussion as we share how our organizations are employing a wide range of strategies and solutions to advance equity and accessibility in New York City’s parks. \nThis event is limited to 100 spots. If you’re unable to access the Zoom webinar on event day\, visit our Facebook page to watch it streamed live during the broadcast. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER TO ATTEND\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday\, September 24 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.\n\nRegister for this event > \nCelebrate Climate Week NYC with us as we host a virtual event that explores the findings of the NAC’s recent analysis of carbon storage and sequestration in NYC’s forests and highlights how our organization is advancing climate adaptation and forest management in New York City. \nNew York City is home to over 7\,000 acres of ecologically diverse\, native forest — a vast natural resource that plays a large role in how the city adapts to challenges presented by climate change. When we think about carbon\, the value of rural forests in mitigating climate change and offsetting emissions is well understood. However\, in urban settings\, the contribution of forests in capturing and storing carbon is not well quantified. \nIn 2019\, the NAC used extensive forest assessment data to calculate the amount of carbon sequestered and stored in New York City’s forested natural areas. We completed this study to better understand the value of this resource in mitigating climate change and to evaluate the role of restoration and management in influencing carbon capture. Spoiler alert: New York City’s urban forests have a lot of potential to be part of the climate solution. \nThis event is limited to 100 spots. If you’re unable to access the Zoom webinar on event day\, visit our Facebook page to watch it streamed live during the broadcast. This event was made possible through support to the Natural Areas Conservancy from Con Edison. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER TO ATTEND\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday\, September 24 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. \nRegister for this event > \nCelebrate Climate Week NYC and learn how climate change has affected Prospect Park and other natural areas in New York City and the projections for the future\, including how Prospect Park Alliance and the Natural Areas Conservancy are using the best available science to mitigate the negative effects of climate change and preserve our urban forests. \nHear from Prospect Park Alliance forest ecologist Howard Goldstein and the Natural Areas Conservancy’s Justin Bowers\, program manager for Natural Areas Restoration and the creator of Forest Identification and Restoration Selection Tool (FIRST)\, which helps forest restoration practitioners manage for and adapt to geographic and climate conditions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER TO ATTEND

SUMMARY:YANA Panel | Scenario Planning: What Does Education Look Like in Fall 2020?
DESCRIPTION:Scenario Planning: What Does Education Look Like in Fall 2020?\nTuesday\, June 23\, 2020 | 6:30pm EDT Virtual Panel Discussion followed by Audience Q&A. \nLed by Professor Barbara Biasi\, Yale School of Management\nCOVID-19 has created complex\, new challenges for educational nonprofits from grades K-12 through college. Issues such as teacher and student safety\, health testing\, privacy\, the cost and effectiveness of eLearning\, student extracurricular opportunities\, transportation policies\, supply chain logistics\, and more need to be addressed. \nScenario thinking can help organizations better anticipate and adapt to dramatic changes\, increase agility and resilience\, and turn uncertainty into an advantage.  \nJoin us for a conversation to learn how educators are planning to address these challenges in the face of uncertainty. While no one has clear answers today\, we know that Yale trains individuals to think creatively at the forefront of issues — the ideas presented and discussed will be a provocative conversation about what to expect and ways to respond. \n*** \nSpeakers: \n\nJeremy Chiappetta (SOM ’02)\, CEO of Blackstone Valley Prep\, six charter schools serving 2\,000 students in K-12 in Rhode Island\nMeghan Hughes (YC ’88)\, President\, Community College of Rhode Island\, the largest community college in New England\nPericles Lewis\, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Vice President for Global Strategy)\, Yale University\nLeslie Torres-Rodriguez\, Superintendent of Hartford Public Schools serving 18\,000 PreK-12 students from Hartford and nearly 90 nearby towns with 39 schools and 18 magnet schools\nBarbara Biasi\, Assistant Professor of Economics at SOM whose research focuses on labor economics and microeconomics with special application to education and creativity.
